This course satisfies the Language Arts requirements for 11th-grade students. It explores American literature as a context for learning, covering four major areas from the Common Core State Standards: (1) Reading literature, (2) Reading non-fiction, (3) Writing, and (4) Speaking and listening. In reading instruction, students focus on skills such as citing textual evidence, analyzing characters, determining themes or main ideas, and analyzing text structure and point of view. Writing opportunities emphasize argument, informative/explanatory, and narrative genres. Through a variety of discussion formats and digital media presentations, students develop their speaking and listening skills while actively engaging with the course material. (Semester 1 of 2)
